Regional Competitiveness Index:
Molise Region at 201st place in Europe over 262 regions analyzed.

On August 24th the update of European Competitiveness Index by the EU Commission was published. The index consists of 3 main categories of indicators (pillars) referred to as Basic Group, Efficiency Group and Innovation Group. Each pillar has several sub-pillars, for a total of 11, including, for example, infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, labour market efficiency, technological readiness.
It should be noted immediately Italy’s exit from the set of best performer in Europe – Italy is ranked 17th out of 27 – behind countries such as Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Sweden, but also Portugal, Cyprus, Spain and Ireland.
Utrecht (Netherlands) ranked number one on the competitiveness index followed by "greater" London (UK), Berkshire-Buckinghamshire-Oxfordshire (UK) and Stockholm (Sweden), while Lombardia, which in the 2010 was within the first hundred positions, falls sharply to 128th place.
The study offers a detailed comparison between the indices measured in different regions; it should be noted, for Molise, an advance of 16 positions compared to the previous ranking. The Molise region stands at 201st place on the 262 regions analyzed. However, despite the progress reported, is notable for the Molise a positioning backward from all regions of North and Central Italy. Molise performance is similar to that of Campania, Basilicata Puglia and Sardinia, with results comparable to those achieved by the most depressed areas of Eastern Europe. By analyzing the detail of the indicators, for Molise is highlighted the recovery of some positions with respect to labour market efficiency, the conditions of health in terms of life expectancy and causes of mortality, and GDP per capita, instead there are downturns in the charts relating to lifelong learning systems, to workers in technology sectors and in the attractiveness of foreign companies. It should be noted, unfortunately, indices far below the average as regards the pillar Innovation Group, that includes Technological Readiness, Business Sophistication and Innovation.
